Analytical Essay #1
You are expected to read Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan and write an analytical essay of 4-5 pages in length. To complete this assignment you will need to read the book carefully and thoughtfully, engaging with the material, and connecting it to lectures, discussions, and other readings in the course.
Pollan’s book has been an enormous popular success among the general public, while also eliciting enthusiasm from biologists, natural scientists, and horticulturalists. Pollan examines the relationship between plants and people from a unique and revealing perspective. In the process he reaffirms the deep roots of our connections to the plant world and provides insights into the complex and often hidden ways that plants affect people today.
For this assignment you must write a critical essay that examines some aspect of the book and relate it to our lectures, readings, and discussions about the ways that plants affect the well being of human populations. You may identify a particular topic or section in the book or a theme that Pollan addresses more generally. The essay must have a thesis that you develop with evidence from the book and the course, and your interpretation of the evidence. It should also include appropriate citations.
The essay shouldinclude:
- Overview of the book with:
- Statement of the book’s thesis
- Explanation of its context and intended audience
- Information about the author (area of expertise, profession, etc.)
- Description of the main parts of the book
- Explanation of how the author develops and supports his thesis
- Analysis that includes:
- Your thesis
