Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

 

Q1 consists two parts, i) fill in the chart will the graph and tracking data of Hurricane Rina and sea surface temperature (SST). ii) plot a graph using excel.

Q2 consists 2 questions i) and ii). 200 words for each i) and ii).

 

Assigned Hurricane: 2011 Rina (Atlantic)

Q1. Each of you has been assigned a hurricane taken from the years 2009 to 2012. You will be required to discuss aspects of your storm using tracking image, tracking data and sea surface temperature data.

The tracking image and tracking data can be downloaded from Unisys Weather (graph and tracking data will also be uploaded). The hurricane archive data is accessible from the left hand side menu (Hurricane data) on the Unisys page (http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane). Find your hurricane in the archive. You will see a graph that tracks the hurricane as well as a link to tracking data. Download and print off both of these (you may wish to modify the colour scheme of the tracking image to avoid excessive ink usage).

(i) Fill out the following Table for each segment of the hurricane track. (A segment is the duration the hurricane stays at a Saffir-Simpson rating, however for hurricanes which stay at one rating for an extended period of time, you divide this segment into smaller segments). Continue on a separate page if necessary. The last column, ΔP/Δt, is the pressure tendency and represents the change in pressure with time. A hurricane (or midlatitude cyclone) is said to be developing if the pressure tendency is negative. To calculate the pressure tendency you take two successive pressure readings, subtract the earlier from the later and divide by the time elapsed, {the first entry will be blank}.

(ii) Using the track data, make plots of pressure, pressure tendency (change of pressure with time, ΔP/Δt), and wind speed vs. time. (3 plots with time on the x-axis).Using excel

Q 2. Hurricane discussion

(i) Discuss your storm’s path. Does your storm follow the “typical” path taken by an Atlantic hurricane? Why or why not?

(ii) Discuss the duration of your storm (i.e. its wind speed and central pressure) as well as the changes in strength with time (refer to the calculated pressure tendencies and the sea surface temperature anomalies).
